Reading Dawson’s work and listening to her talk about Star Wars in general, it’s clear she’s having just as much fun telling these stories as we are consuming them.

It’s hard to argue that this author knows the Star Wars fandom well and won’t hesitate to both serve and surprise them. The themes running through her work are as true to Star Wars as the worlds she has created. To write an entire book about one of the sequel trilogy’s most mysterious villains and still leave readers begging for more is, to say the least, most impressive. Perhaps an even more impressive feat has been her ability to expand upon Phasma’s backstory and character while deliberately still not revealing too much about her in the process. Captain Cardinal/Archex, who began as the secondary villain in a much bigger story, becomes the broken survivor and potential hero you can’t help but root for. Penning Galaxy’s Edge: Black Spire meant Dawson would have to ease audiences into territory never explored in the expanded universe before: Not just Black Spire Outpost, but also the trauma that results from escaping the First Order barely alive.ĭawson has already proven she is a master at creating and developing characters both foreign and familiar. Magine agreeing to write a full-length Star Wars novel for the first time and being given the task of summarizing the dark and complex life of a character like Captain Phasma.ĭelilah Dawson didn’t just accept the dare: She executed it flawlessly.
